To be honest, I’m not sure where to even begin when writing this post. Birth Photography wasn’t ever anything I had set out to do, so when Stephanie texted me to ask if it was something I would be interested in shooting for her, I was a little suprised to say the least. Surprised and then excited. Shaun & Steph are some of my dearest friends and the thought of being present during such a monumentous life event made me incredibly honoured.
I had only ever seen maybe two other photographer’s birth stories so I went into the delivery room unsure of what to expect or how to shoot it. But it became crystal clear so quickly. It was real, it was raw, and it was full of love and strength. Shaun’s hand on Steph’s face giving her strength. Stephanie’s determination and concentration with each contraction. Steph’s mom crying along with her, wanting to take her pain away. The entire experience was so real. I cheered her on and wince in pain along with her. I tried to keep my emotions in check, but couldn’t help but cry along with them when Neko finally made her entrance. It will go down as one of my most incredible life experiences ever.
So here’s a little slideshow, about 5 minutes long, documenting the arrival of Miss Neko into our world. It’s real, unretouched and simple. The music is Hoppipolla by Sigor Ros, a song near and dear to their hearts. And after hearing it in the delivery room, it is in mine now too.
With a heart that’s grown another size bigger, thank you Shaun and Stephanie.
And xoxox little Neko. Beautiful girl, I love you so.
