A family portrait session in the Winter? I say – yes, absolutely! Many people hesitate to book photography in winter, but these sessions always end up being some of my favourite. The cool tones, the freshly fallen snow landing on hair and eyelashes. It’s so pretty and deserves to be documented!
If you are afraid that cold weather means that you can’t dress cute, have no fear and look no further! Here are some outfit ideas that will keep you warm and fashionable during your winter family portrait session.
1. Choose A Bright Colour To Match
There nothing like a fun pop of colour amongst the cooler tones of a Winter backdrop! Colours like red, pink, orange, yellow, or even purple look gorgeous and vibrant in snowy photoshoots. Also, don’t feel like you have to go out and buy all matching sweaters to coordinate. Mix and matching different clothing items of the same colour will give each of your family members a unique look and you likely won’t need to buy anything new!
2. Bring A Blanket
Although not necessarily a clothing item, blankets make great accessories in Winter family portrait sessions. Not only do they keep you warm, but they also provide a great excuse for a cuddle puddle! Not to mention, you can match the colour of the blanket with your outfits or choose a fun pattern for a little extra fun pop in your photos.
3. Cozy Sweaters
Nothing like the classic! A cozy sweater is always cute. Cream tones and pastels are my favourite for snowy sessions and always give the portraits a soft, sweet feel. Plus, you have the option to either go fancy or formal! Dress up with some nice trousers and boots, or dress down with your favourite pair of jeans and winter footwear.
4. Dress Coats
Who doesn’t love getting a little fancy? Even in Winter, I suggest to my clients to wear something that makes them feel special. A simple way to get fancy for your Winter family portrait session, is to pull out your favourite dress coat from your closet! You and your family will be warm, Winter weather ready, and feeling like your best selves!
